Allows daily use of small and medium-sized UAVs for low-horizon flight

Uniform agreement with UAV cloud server can provide drone flight trajectory services and other functions for air traffic control

On December 24, the reporter learned from China Mobile (Chengdu) Industrial Research Institute (hereinafter referred to as "Chengdu Research Institute") that Chengdu Research Institute recently released the world's first drone-specific 5G communication product-Hubble One, which will mainly Communication link for drones.

"The design of this 5G product is mainly to solve the problem of over-the-horizon flight of drones," said Chen Shengwei, head of the 5G communication product project team for the drone of Chengdu Research Institute. At present, the main flight mode of drones is in line of sight Flying, the flight distance is within a few kilometers, "Hubble 1 allows small and medium-sized UAVs with more daily use and low-horizon flying."

This is a task that 4G modules could not complete before. Chen Shengwei explained: "Simply speaking, 4G signals mainly cover planes, and there is not much coverage in stereo vertical distance, while 5G signals can be covered in three dimensions." 5G large-scale antenna array technology allows a single base station within 3 kilometers and a vertical distance of 300 meters. Keep a stable signal. "At this vertical distance, 4G signals have many coverage dead zones at low altitudes, which cannot meet the application requirements for continuous coverage of drones."

The products released this time are specifically tailored for drones. Compared with existing mobile phones, the performance is stronger. "We did an experiment. We mounted an ordinary 5G mobile phone on the drone, and about 200 meters, the video of the 720p backhaul has begun to freeze; while the special product of the 5G drone is raised to 300m in the air and back to 1080p. The videos are very smooth. "Chen Shengwei said that this drone 5G communication product will be mass-produced early next year.

In addition, in order to meet the mounting requirements of small and medium-sized drones, the module has been designed to be lightweight. The overall weight is 130 grams, which can meet the size and weight requirements of drones in most industries. The product also integrates 5G multi-antenna design and supports different networking modes of SA / NSA.

The product also integrates air traffic control docking capabilities. "Now the communication protocols of various drone manufacturers are private protocols, and they are not connected. When communicating information, they speak different 'languages', and our module unifies the protocols to the civil aviation management platform. Everyone says the same type.' Language and communication and management are more convenient. "Chen Shengwei said that a unified protocol with the drone cloud server can provide functions such as drone flight trajectory services for air traffic control.

"In the future, we will take the 5G network as the core and integrate the three business flows of application, air traffic management, and flight control, so that the drone integrated into the 5G network can achieve more precise control and provide a reliable guarantee for the low-altitude communication of the drone." Su Yu, deputy dean of Chengdu Research Institute, said that in addition to the field of drones, in the next step, Chengdu Research Institute will continue to work on 5G application research and development in vertical industries such as telemedicine, smart education, and smart agriculture to promote the province's digital economic development.
