Eric Cheng, award-winning underwater photographer, aerial imager and UAV/drone industry visionary, has completed a great handbook for the aspiring aerial photographer with his new release Aerial Photography and Videography Using Drones.

Beginning with a Foreword written by Adam Savage (Mythbusters), this guide takes you through the rise of the drone industry; the hardware, cameras, techniques, procedures, practices and applications to get you started in aerial photography and videography with small consumer drones – as well as the current regulatory state of drone usable in the U.S.. Eric’s writing style is clear and straight forward. The information and concepts he shares are easy to grasp and delivered in a conversational tone from a confident, experienced photographer and technologist.

Book Cover

With Eric’s many experiences and travels around the globe, he’s had many exciting opportunities to shoot some fantastic locations from the air; including the breathtaking cover image captured during a live network television broadcast flying over the Holuhraun volcano in Iceland.

From cover to cover, you’ll experience aerial photography that will be inspiring and captivating. You’ll learn about the history of RC drones and the current state and how to be a proficient operator and photographer. He shares a lot of tips and tricks for getting the best images and videos from a variety of different drones and cameras – primarily GoPros and the built-in cameras in DJI quadcopters.

His techniques go deep into problem solving hardware and image issues, post-processing images and even stitching panoramas. Many of his chapters feature links to videos from an online video training title that I had the honor to share in the production with him on, Aerial Photography and Videography Using Drones Learn by Video .

But what makes this book truly unique are the Real World examples and the techniques used to capture and create these amazing images. Eric shares a lot of his own experiences along with several other examples from well-trailed colleagues such as Romeo Durscher, Julian Cohen and Renee Lusano with the images, the gear that captured it and the stories that accompany these breathtaking images.

This is a must-have guide for anyone just getting into drone photography, and a handbook that every aerial videographer should keep in the studio as a reference and inspiration.
